There are several pranayama exercises that break up excessive phlegm and increase alertness as part of a kapha home practice. Kapalabhati is a rapid pumping breath exercise in which the abdomen is actively contracted in a series of quick exhalations. During this technique the diaphragm rises, forcing air out of the lungs and clearing the respiratory system to loosen mucus. Another beneficial pranayama practice for kapha individuals is brahmari, or humming breath. To execute this technique, make a snoring sound as you inhale, vibrating the throat area. On the exhale make a humming sound that resembles a bee and extend your exhalation as long as possible.
